Book Review: Book Lovers

By Emily Henry

Nora Stephens’ life is books- she’s read them all- and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

Which is why she agrees to go to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina for the month of August when Libby begs her for a sisters’ trip away- with visions of a small- town transformation for Nora, who she’s convinced needs to become the heroine in her own story. But instead of picnics in meadows, or run-ins with a handsome country doctor or bulging-forearmed bartender, Nora keeps bumping into Charlie Lastra, a bookish brooding editor from back in the city. It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute.

If Nora knows she’s not an ideal heroine, Charlie knows he’s nobody’s hero, but as they are thrown together again and again- in a series of coincidences no editor worth their salt would allow- what they discover might just unravel the carefully crafted stories they’ve written about themselves.

“A reminder that there are things in life so valuable that you must risk the pain of losing them for the joy of briefly having them.” – Emily Henry, Book Lovers.

Book Lovers-Plot

Nora Stephens is a literary agent who worked hard to get a job and make living for herself and her sister after her mother died. Nora’s life is all about books and her little sister. Her dating life doesn’t really turn out too well for her and she has a work nemesis, Charlie Lastra, later the love interest in the story. Libby, Nora’s sister suggest that the sisters should take a trip to Sunshine Falls, a small town from their favourite book ‘Once’.

This trip to Sunshine Falls was meant to be life changing for both the sisters as Libby being pregnant with her third child needed an out of New York City before the baby arrived and Nora being the big sister never really said no to her. Libby decides on small tasks the sisters need to do before the trip is over and by the end of their one-month trip to this town, Nora’s life get changed for good.

My views on ‘Book Lovers’

Book Lovers is an enemy to lovers trope. Nora has an undeniable chemistry with her work nemesis Charlie which becomes even more irresistible when they both meet at Sunshine Falls. The first of the book focuses on Nora’s life, her griefs, her sister, and them completing the ‘List’ Libby prepared. The second half focuses on Nora moving on from her mother’s death. Getting close to her sister again and accepting the life changing things happening. I really liked Charlie’s character. He is patient, even when he had rivalry with Nora, he never lost his calm.

In the starting of the book, you read about how every romance book is predictable, but if you have read enough of them, you will guess the ending of this one too. Pretty ironical I would say. After Libby moves to Sunshine Falls with her family and Nora is left alone in NYC, Charlie comes as a Christmas present.

It is a light and quick read. We see character growth as Nora starts a career, lets a man into her life, move on from grief and let go of her sister. I like how the book has elements of clever humor in between the main leads. I would definitely recommend it.
