Book Review: Love Hypothesis
By Ali Hazelwood
As
a third-year Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith doesn’t believe in lasting romantic
relationships- but her best friend does, and that’s what git her into this
situation. Convincing Anh that Olive is dating and well on her way to a happily
ever after was always going to take more than hand-wavy Jedi mind tricks:
Scientists require proof. So, like any self-respecting biologist, Olive panics
and kisses the first man she sees.
That
man is none other than Adam Carlsen, a young hotspot professor- and well-known
ass. Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford’s reigning lab
tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when
a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive’s career on the Bunsen
burner, Adam surprise her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding…
six-pack abs.
Suddenly
their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. And Olive
discovers that the only thing more complicated than a hypothesis on love is
putting her own heart under the microscope.
“I
wish you could see yourself the way I see you.”- Ali Hazelwood, Love
Hypothesis.
Love hypothesis: Plot
Love hypothesis is a story about a
third-year Ph.D. student Olive, who wants to prove to her best friend that she
has moved on in her life from her past relationship and dating, for her best
friend to date her ex-boyfriend. In order to prove this to her, she kisses the
first person she sees, which ends up to be Dr Carlsen, the most arrogant
professor in the university. Though, they both agree to fake dating as they
both could be benefiting from this arrangement. But Olive eventually starts
wishing what was fake dating turns out to be real.
Love Hypothesis : My views
Olive is showed a scholar who doesn’t
care about dating until she is forced to fake date the most hated professor for
her best friend’s sake. I like the book; it starts off as bland but it delivers
by the end of it. Adam is always quiet, and supposedly in a bad mood. To make
their fake dating look real, they plan on making a public appearance as a
couple every Wednesday.
The book shows how Olive is declined
of opportunities in a male dominated field. It shows are great insight in the
American academia. Love Hypothesis is a book with mixed reviews. Some love the
book; some do not call themselves a fan. But in my opinion, it gets better by
the time we finish reading it.
Olive deals with shocking
circumstances, and Adam stays by her side through it.
We get to see Olive and Adam’s meet
cute in the prologue. Then the story starts with Olive kissing the most
unlikeable professor of Stanford University. The story focus on lot more than
romance, Olive’s professional life which makes the story lot more believable,
at times we get to see little to no life of main characters outside their love
lives. We see problems Olive face in her career, challenges she overcome and
growing as a person along the way.
For the sex scenes, I love they had a
bit of awkwardness to them, which made it realistic and relatable. Romance
books have these perfect sex scene with characters knowing exactly what to say.
But we see a real version which was refreshing.
Serious issues are delicately handled and well written. Adam helps Olive throughout the book. I personally liked the plot twist a lot. It was unexpected and caught me off guard. I can say it, I did not see that coming. Beautifully written, Love Hypothesis is a great read which not only focus on love but every other aspect of main characters life.
Love Hypothesis Quotes which will make you read the whole thing.
“I’m starting to wonder if this is what being in
love is. Being okay with ripping yourself to shreds, so the other person can
stay whole.”
“You can fall in love: someone will catch you.”
“And then I’ll come find you, and I’ll take care
of you.”
“He’d clearly never seen a rom-com or read a
romance novel in his life.”
“You kiss him and next thing you know he’s saving
your ass and he’s buying you scones and calling you a smart-ass in a weirdly
affectionate tone.”
“She had not figured that Adam would notice her
while in conversation with a young, beautiful faculty member. She had not
figured that he’d suddenly stop speaking, eyes widening and lips parting; that
he’d mutter “Excuse me” while staring at Olive and stand from the table,
ignoring the curious looks in his directions that he’d march to the entrance,
where Olive was, with quick, long strides and a concerned expression. ‘Olive,
are you okay?’ he asked her.”
