Book Review : In Five Years by Rebecca Serle
Book Review: In Five Years
By Rebecca Serle
Dannie
Kohan has held true to her meticulously crafted five-year plan since she
understood the concept. On the day she nails the most important interview of
her career and gets engaged to the perfect man, she’s well on her way to
fulfilling her life goals.
But
that night Dannie falls asleep and dreams of a night five years in the future
where she’s engaged to another man. It was just a dream, she tells herself when
she wakes, but it felt so real.
Determined
to ignore the odd experience, she files it away in the back of her mind. That
is, until five years later, when Dannie meets the man from her dream…
“Love
doesn’t require a future.”- Rebecca Serle, In Five Years.
In Five Years- Plot
The book follows a 28-year-old lawyer,
Dannie Kohan. Dannie is a plan it all person, who knows exactly what she’s
going to do in her next five years. She gets her dream job and is about to
marry her boyfriend. But on the night of her engagement, she sees a dream of
future, where she is with a different man wearing a different engagement ring
and in a different apartment which is hers.
She spends her next four years trying
to forget that dream but then she meets the man from her dream and everything
changes.
I tried to keep the plot spoiler free,
this book made me cry in more than one occasion. I would definitely recommend
it, it’s not a love story you think it will be, the plot twist is
heart-breaking and the ending is even sadder. Now straight to my spoiler filled
reviews.
My views on ‘In Five Years’
My boyfriend gifted me this book a
while back, even though it was a short novel I took my sweet time reading it.
But I couldn’t keep it down after the first half.
IN FIVE YEARS introduce us to this 28
year old girl, who plans everything from her career to her dating life to her
everything. She has went through personal loss, her brother passed away in a
car accident, and she has that empty void throughout the book.
Everything was going according to her
plan David, her boyfriend proposed to her and she interviewed for her dream job
but that night she saw a dream that she’s living with someone else, she was in
future.
When you start reading the book it
will not catch up to you quickly, it sure didn’t with me. But as the story
progresses we finally get to see what the whole book is about, its about grief
and love and letting go.
Beautifully written in my opinion, IN
FIVE YEARS convey its message direct. Dannie loses her best friend Bella to
cancer; she breaks up with her fiancé and deals with the grief.
We see Dannie as someone who thinks
she can control everything, first her life, her relationship, her career and
then her Bella’s illness. It is a story of an incredible friendship, and what
real love is.
Read the book with an open mind, the book was really hyped and people have different views regarding the storyline. I personally loved it after a point the book get so interesting you won’t be able to keep it down. Some might relate to Dannie some might relate to Bella, its just the way it is written that makes you feel so connected. I cried when Bella got sick and sicker. I couldn’t imagine what Dannie must be feeling. It’s a really good book y’all. READ IT.
