Air- Movie Review | The Movie Based On A True Story
AIR
Movie Review
The sports drama film AIR, which was directed by Ben Affleck and written
by Alex Convery, is a triumph. The film shows basketball in particular but also
the world of sports behind the scenes, rather than showing genuine sports on
the pitch. Rather, the difficulties are
encountered in boardrooms and negotiation tables.
The story revolves around a man named Sonny, played by Matt Damon, who
is attempting to negotiate a once-in-a-lifetime agreement between Michael
Jordan and Nike.
Everyone is familiar with the Michael Jordan and Nike partnership story.
For Michael Jordan, Nike creates the Air Jordan, which goes on to become one of
the most popular and well-known sneakers. Telling a well-known tale in a
way that keeps the audience interested. As a director, Ben Affleck has again
exceeded his expectations.
With only a 17% market share in basketball shoes in 1984, Nike is well
behind the competition. When CEO Phil Knight instructs Sonny Vaccaro (played by
Matt Damon), a nimble talent scout to sign basketball stars to boost sales
and save the floundering department, Nike realizes that if it does not
increase its sales, it will be forced out of the market.
Sonny recommends Michael Jordan, a young and promising player, be given
an entire budget to promote the shoes rather than having three players do it.
Given that Michael hasn't played on an NBA court yet and is still unproven,
this is a major risk for Nike. But Vaccaro is tenacious, and he manages to work
out a deal with the Jordan's and create a new line of athletic shoes that
ultimately revolutionize the industry.
'AIR' is a film that will give you shivers, especially when Matt Damon's
character Sonny delivers an outstanding monologue to the Jordan's at a key point
in the film to persuade them to accept the Nike offer. The movie inspires you
to strive for excellence and have faith in your abilities. Being a teenager at
the time, and with his face being carefully disguised and his voice being
barely audible, Michael is featured very little in the film. This may be seen
as him not being interested in business, which is why his mother Deloris is in
charge.
Damon exudes a nostalgic charisma and unwavering resolve, flawlessly
embodying Vaccaro's sincerity. Affleck,
though brief in his presence, captivates effortlessly, showcasing his
undeniable magnetism. Having ventured into the realm of superheroes, he
unmistakably revels in the charm of these more intimate productions.
AIR inspires you and transcends the boundaries of its genre to become a
truly exceptional sports film, capable of captivating audiences regardless of
their interest in sports. It is a testament to the film's sheer brilliance that
it stands as a work of perfection, weaving together a compelling narrative,
outstanding performances, and impeccable direction.
Just watch the film.
